Summer in Jackson
08-04-2009

Summer is in full swing here in Jackson. There are ungulate babies everywhere. Yesterday I ran into a whole group of pronghorn mom and fawns with a few bucks scattered across the group, there were about 30 in all. Earlier I watched a group of elk and their calves, the young just starting to lose their spots. Moose calves seem in abundance this year, much more seem to be around than is typical. I watched a group of tourists almost get trampled this week as a curious calf got to close to them much to momma moose displeasure, luckily she just decided to leave instead and take her calf elsewhere.

Wolf pups are also thriving almost everywhere, the tails on the pups are now longer than their bodies and they frequently seem to trip over their still overlarge feet as the frolic around at rendezvous sites. Bears are not really too obvious, and I am not seeing many. The green spring and good food abundance has them up high for the most part and staying out of trouble, thats a really good thing although it means I am spotting them a little less often.

I was fortunate enough to be married this spring on June 20th and so am now a Thompson and a Bowen and very, very happy. I wish you the best and happiness too. May summer bring you some of its many gifts.

Winter Wonderland
1-22-09

Happy new year! It has been a snowy one for us here in Jackson Hole. With a new tram at the mountain resort and a plethora of wild critters on the National Elk Refuge I have been pretty busy! Currently the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service reports around 6,000 elk have moved onto the refuge, the Bighorn sheep are in full rut and the bison have stayed lower and more visible this year as a whole, perhaps because of the hunt that just finished earlier this month.

I had a fun time watching the bison the day before yesterday take over the old homestead on the Miller Butte road on the backside of the refuge. There were bison everywhere! In the front yard, on the driveway in the back - I don't know if anyone lives there anymore but I think a refuge manager does, how he got out of his house that day with all the bison I cannot guess! Boy, its tough living in paradise...cant get out of your house because its surrounded by bison, that's a new one.

The wolves are now in full breeding season up in the Lamar Valley, Yellowstone. Although since we are not running as many trips up there this year I am not going to see much, if any of it. Still we have wolf sightings going on down here in Grand Teton as well. Interloper was taken in Grand Teton last year, not the more famous Lamar, it is arguably my best wolf picture. So you never know, anything can happen when its breeding season! A lot of action has been going on particularly near Blacktail butte so keep those eyes open!

There are loads of deer up on the steep hillsides around town, munching where the snow is shallower, I have been spending some time skiing, where the snow is deeper- both of us seem to be enjoying ourselves. To each their own I suppose.

I also have been working with the Wilson elementary school on Mondays teaching snowshoeing this winter, as I have in the past. I have a great and enthusiastic group of students who are just a blast.

So that is the latest from Jackson, wish us lots of snow and sunny beautiful days, the cold weather has made the snow sparkle like diamonds, at least before my dog goes bounding through it...more will be upcoming on the site soon in preparation for my show in march, more on that soon!

Best wishes!

Falls End
10-23-08

We are getting occasional snow showers here in Jackson hole and with snow gradually creeping down the Tetons toward the valley floor we are approaching the end of fall and moving into the long 6 months of winter typical for Jackson.

Many bears have now climbed into their dens for a long winters nap although some are still out and about, with every passing snowstorm more and more disappear from the landscape and will be gone until early spring. I always miss them, the woods seem oh so more sterile with out them.

Meanwhile wolf pups continue to vanish in the Yellowstone area, distemper has now been named a likely cause (versus parvo) but no one really knows. The Slough creek pack have lost all of their pups, the Druids are down to 5 (they started with around 18). The Oxbow pack is now with no pups and down to really low numbers. All of this has been ongoing through the summer and fall but we are now seeing concrete numbers of who was lost versus just my guesses. Ralph Maughan's website has some more information if you are interested, the link is on my links page.

Biking and Hiking and outdoor activities in general are becoming dependent on mud depths and how much mud one can manage on a given day, it is rare to have a dry enough day for a really good crisp bike ride. My dog, Bumble and I have taken up indoor agility instead, he is snowing great promise, I on the other hand can barely keep up!

The pronghorn are still here although for how long is anyone's guess, not too much longer I think, no bighorns on the Elk Refuge yet but soon. Elk rut is wrapping up as is the moose rut. The deer rut is still going strong.

Thats the news from Jackson, here's hoping you are having a nice fall with perhaps a little less mud!

Happy Fall!
10-7-08

Happy fall everyone. I just returned from the Lamar valley up in Yellowstone, things are pretty quiet up there. The Druids were up in the high country so only the Sloughs were visible. however there were a whole bunch of bears on a carcass in the Hayden valley. Two other interesting bear sightings were viewable for several days here in Grand Teton. A grizzly up by the Jackson Lake dam and a black bear on the Jenny Lake road.

The aspen trees are passing their peak now but were resplendent all week. Oxbow bend was particularly spectacular this year, I have some good images I will post of it soon. The cottonwoods have reached peak color and the moose are munching among them in good numbers as they swing in to full rut. The Gros Ventre campground is particularly full of rutting moose right now. And of course the elk are bugling through the evening hours as the coyotes yip in the distance. Fall is such a wonderful time here in the Tetons.

I have a lot of exciting new images that I will be putting up in the coming days more bears, new locations and some great new vistas, I hope you will check them out as they go up!

Long time no news!
07-19-08

Hello dear reader! Its been quite a while since I have updated you on all the wonderful happenings in the greater Yellowstone region!

Summer is in very full swing, almost all the songbirds have fledged, young ones are flying about exploring the new world available to them. One has to very careful when driving to not hit a low flying youngster or a young ground squirrel scurrying across the road on a first experience with cars! My garden which got quite a late start from our very cold spring is now well under way but not well enough I think, to have entries for the fair. We have passed the Arrow leaf Balsamroot flowering although there are still some giant yellow blooms about, and have moved into purple lupine and pink sticky geranium.

Lots of black bears about, the mating season is just about over as I see very few now hanging out with a "friend" bear and now they are mostly loners. Lupine meadows and the hillsides of Tewinott mountain are littered with brown and black and cinnamon furry bears. One bear a large collard brown, has even been entertaining me by being on the valley floor some mornings. A few evenings ago its was even sitting by the inside road, I think a bit of an ant eating addiction may have something to do with it! I hope it does not get into trouble. There is a culvert trap as well set out there to study bears at lupine although I do not think they have caught one yet. I wonder what they are bating the trap with? I know for problem bears they will bait it with garbage or even tents but for a wild bear? maybe a smelly carcass or something.

I went up for a quick visit to Yellowstone and had a nice Griz view on Dunraven pass as well as two black bears very close to the road. I wished I had time to do some nice solid wolf watching as the Druids have been taking the pups across the river to feed but alas I had quite a bit more driving to do and so had to leave before I got a chance to witness some of the druids 9 pups from this year. The Slough by the way are just caring for one lone pup, after so many pregnant females this is quite the surprise. It looks like we may have parvo, or something like it again in the Lamar striking the pups low.

As for Grand Teton, wolf activity is here too although a bit more under the radar of course, having some unusual sightings here that could be very promising. More on that when thing become more clear.

I will have some new pictures up very soon including the new southwest section as well as some more critters and vistas from the GYE I will of course post a note to let you know when that happens! Happy Summer!

Wolf News
5-13-2008

Hello from Jackson! As I have been recovering from shoulder surgery I have not been out and about as much in the parks. I am attempting to make up for that by exploring cyber-space a bit more effectively. I have found a few things wolf related you might find interesting.

Firstly according to Ralph Maughan's Wildlife News The Hayden wolves have moved out of Yellowstone into the northwest in Montana. Lets hope they make it, I will keep my fingers crossed.
Also rubber bullets were finally deployed on the two human habituated Druid Wolves to try and reteach them a fear of people. This is all to the good, they were right on the way to a meeting with a speeding car, I hope they will learn to be more wary of the roads and people. All we need is a wolf bite in the park to make things get even more out of hand.

I also finally was directed to a good map of the "trophy game zone" for wolves in Wyoming it can be found here Considering the difficulty I have had in finding a good copy I figure it may be useful to link to it for other folks as well.

The grass is greening up, much to my dogs happiness and the bulbs are blooming, most animals have left the Elk refuge. Spring, by golly is actually here! I hope you are enjoying it wherever you are!

Spring (or not) in Yellowstone
4-26-2008

I just got from a spring trip up to the northern range and Lamar Valley of Yellowstone and mostly what I can tell you is, it's not spring at all up there!

There were 3 sometime 4 feet of snow piled up in some places and dead and dying herbivores everywhere. The bison and elk just look tired with ribs showing and low heads, you can tell they just don't have much energy left. There are also some very small baby bison born already who were much more active and enthusiastic than mom in most cases. They are sticking to the small patches of ground, brown and dry that are around.

The wolves and bears in the meantime are benefiting and doing well. I checked out the Slough, Druid and Oxbow wolf den sites from afar and all appear to have given birth to pups. While there I watched the Slough pack take down an elk in an amazing display of agility. I also had fun watching a grizzly and a wolf argue over a carcass, often this time of year a wolf will kill something and a griz will steal it away. This seemed very much the case here and let me tell you the griz was NOT going to give it back. You could almost feel the wolf's frustration. We will see if I got any good shots for the site of the confrontation. Needless to say the griz won this time.

I got caught trying to get home from the park, it snowed and was cold and wintry the whole time I was there and they closed quite a few of the roads. The south entrance opens for the summer on may 9th until then we are using the west entrance, now open. While we need the water (10 years into a drought as we are), I hope for the sake of the critters of Yellowstone we get some warmer weather soon, I don't know how much more of this many animals in Yellowstone can take!

My return to Jackson was of bare ground and seasonal weather, in the 40's quite nice in comparison really. My bulbs are blooming and the Trumpeter swans osprey, eagles and geese are nesting. I spent some time photographing the swans today who were quite vocal protecting their nest sites from other swans. My ears are still ringing from all the honking- they could have cared less about me, absorbed as they were with their swan neighbors. The Elk are leaving the refuge in droves and there are hawks everywhere. All in all it feels like a real spring here abet with more snow than I am used to. Once all this snow melts I will have to get out in the mud and find some good tracks for my Raku projects.

In the meantime I am wishing you warmer weather and sunny skies wherever you are!

Spring is coming!
3-31-2008

The Teton wolf Pack has been hanging out quite a bit near Blacktail butte lately, a trend of more and more movement outside the refuge and toward spring.

Mountain bluebirds can now be seen practically anywhere, as can hawks. Yesterday in four hours I found four Redtail hawks without any real effort, they were right in front of my face! Hopefully we will get some more hawk shots up for you soon. Trumpeters are starting to think about nesting. Canada geese and ravens already are building nests and the insects have returned. I saw a group of ravens and magpies feasting on the snake on tiny invisible (to me) insect bodies, probably hatching from the snow.

In the meantime the bison have moved down into the bottom of the refuge early this year and the elk have formed one big blob on the landscape instead of the usual four blobs one would see. They can read the signs better than me, spring is coming!

Feed Truck Special!
2-15-08
Today I had the opportunity to head out on one of the alfalfa feed trucks on the elk refuge. It was amazing to see thousands of elk running for us as we sat high on the 24,000 lbs of alfalfa pellets. We fed the central heard for several hours until they seemed pretty full, about 10lbs per elk. Thanks to the Jackson Hole Land Trust for sending me out there!
Now I have alfalfa grunk in my nose and eyes and all over my clothes but it was so worth it!
Welcome to Tenley Thompson Photography!
